Here is a chronological list of all the games that Mario has appeared in, either in a starring role, spin off or just a cameo appearance from where things began in 1981 to the present day.

Glossary

  • Cameo - Not a Mario based title, though there is reference to him somewhere along the lines.
  • Spin off - Not a main-stream Mario adventure game, but a spin off in which Mario may be a playable character.
  • Main role - Mario is the starring character in one of his regular adventure games.

1980's

In the 1980's the earliest title did not refer to Mario as we know him today, but as "Jump man" and he was originally a carpenter not a plumber.

 

1981

  • Donkey Kong (Arcade) - Main role as "Jump man"

1982

  • Donkey Kong Jr. (Arcade) - Spin off

1990's

This was a different decade for Mario than the previous 1980's, more title roles were given to Mario rather than simply making Cameo's in other games. Not only this, it would see Mario's introduction to "Edutainment" titles such as typing skills, history, geography etc.

This generation of Mario games saw the end of the massively successful Super Nintendo (SNES) as Mario's main platform and took him to the next level - the Nintendo "ultra" 64 followed by the gamecube and eventually the Wii.
